Biography
Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber is the United Arab Emirates’ Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and a member of the UAE Federal Cabinet. He is also Managing Director and Group CEO of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Executive Chairman of XRG, ADNOC’s international energy investment company, and Chairman of Masdar, roles that span oil and gas, renewable energy, industry and advanced technology.
Al Jaber holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Southern California, an MBA from California State University, Los Angeles, and a PhD from Coventry University in the United Kingdom. In 2006 he led the team that established Masdar, Abu Dhabi’s renewable energy company, which he now chairs, and he led the UAE’s successful bid for Abu Dhabi to host the headquarters of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). Before joining ADNOC he was chief executive of the energy platform at Mubadala, and he served as Minister of State from 2013 to 2020.
Appointed to lead ADNOC in 2016, Al Jaber has overseen a broad transformation of the company, including its first entry into global capital markets, the first public listing of an ADNOC business and international growth through XRG, established in 2024. He became Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology in 2020, when the ministry was created. In 2023 he served as President of COP28, the UN climate conference held in Dubai, where almost 200 countries reached the agreement known as the UAE Consensus. His recognitions include the UN Champions of the Earth award in 2012.
As minister, Al Jaber oversees Operation 300bn, the UAE’s industrial strategy, which aims to raise the industrial sector’s contribution to GDP from AED 133 billion to AED 300 billion by 2031, and the Make it in the Emirates initiative. His focus areas include energy security, in-country value, industrial growth and the rising energy demand linked to artificial intelligence. He also chairs Alterra, a US$30 billion climate investment vehicle launched at COP28 to direct capital towards climate investments in emerging markets and developing economies.
